Waukesha County, WI (May 14, 2025) – A high-speed police pursuit involving two motorcycles traveling southbound on I-43 reached speeds of up to 120 MPH before law enforcement was forced to terminate the chase near Exit 83, according to regional reports.
The pursuit began around 8:21 a.m. in the area near Hilo Dr in Vernon. Officers from Big Bend and Waukesha County initiated the chase after the motorcycles failed to stop for a traffic violation. One of the motorcycles, reportedly carrying a passenger, exited the freeway at Exit 83, reversed direction, and re-entered northbound traffic—passing an officer at 107 MPH.
Due to the excessive speeds and heightened safety risk to other drivers, the pursuit was officially terminated near Exit 83. Authorities continued monitoring from a distance, and the motorcyclists eventually slowed to standard freeway speeds by the county line at approximately 8:32 a.m. The Waukesha County Sheriff’s Office has passed information on to the Milwaukee County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) for continued surveillance and possible future contact.
Risks of High-Speed Motorcycle Pursuits
High-speed pursuits involving motorcycles present a uniquely dangerous set of challenges for both law enforcement and the public. Unlike automobiles, motorcycles can maneuver through traffic with little warning, accelerate quickly, and avoid blockades, making pursuit decisions especially complex and time-sensitive.
Speeds reported during this morning’s incident—120 MPH southbound and 107 MPH northbound—posed an imminent threat to drivers along I-43. In these cases, departments often weigh the urgency of apprehending suspects against the safety of uninvolved motorists, particularly during peak traffic times or in mixed roadway environments.
While no collisions or injuries were reported in this case, the risk of catastrophic accidents remains high during such pursuits. Passengers on motorcycles are especially vulnerable, with little protection in the event of a crash or sudden stop.
Waukesha County continues to coordinate with neighboring jurisdictions to share surveillance data and vehicle descriptions following pursuit terminations. Law enforcement may seek to identify the individuals involved based on dashcam footage or traffic camera recordings.
