Wellington, MO (August 5, 2025) – A 53-year-old man from Lexington sustained injuries in a two-vehicle collision that led to a rollover crash on US-24/Old Santa Fe Trail on Monday evening in Lafayette County.
The crash occurred at approximately 5:30 PM on August 4, 2025, according to the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Investigators report that a 2018 Dodge Ram driven by a 67-year-old man from Wellington had slowed in preparation to make a right-hand turn when it was struck from behind by a 2014 Jeep also traveling eastbound.
The impact caused the Jeep to overturn and come to rest, blocking the roadway. The vehicle sustained extensive damage and was later towed from the scene by Jackson County Tow. The driver, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, suffered minor injuries and was transported by Wellington EMS to Centerpoint Medical Center for treatment.
The driver of the Dodge Ram was not injured and was able to drive his vehicle from the scene. Both drivers were properly restrained, which likely reduced the severity of the injuries involved.
Troopers from Troop A and local responders worked to clear the scene and restore normal traffic flow. The crash remains under investigation.
We wish the injured driver a swift and full recovery and are grateful the incident did not result in more severe outcomes.
Rollover Crashes in Missouri
Monday’s rollover crash on US-24 in Lafayette County reflects one of the more dangerous types of vehicle collisions often seen in Missouri, rear-end impacts that result in vehicle overturns. These incidents, though less frequent than standard collisions, carry a much higher risk of injury due to the violent motion and structural stress placed on the vehicle and its occupants.
In this case, the crash occurred during a routine traffic maneuver, a right-hand turn on a rural section of US-24, also known locally as Old Santa Fe Trail. This stretch of road often sees a mix of local and commuter traffic, with limited shoulders and varying speeds. When a trailing driver is not able to slow or stop in time, the result is often a forceful impact that can cause a vehicle to flip, particularly if it’s a taller model like a Jeep SUV.
Data from the Missouri Department of Transportation confirms that rural roads account for a disproportionate number of rollover incidents. Contributing factors include uneven pavement, lack of barriers, and higher operating speeds. While the driver in this case was fortunate to sustain only minor injuries, rollover crashes can easily result in critical trauma or fatalities, especially when occupants are unrestrained.
Seatbelt use remains a key factor in survival and injury reduction in rollover scenarios. The fact that both drivers in this incident were wearing safety restraints likely prevented far more serious outcomes.
For those injured in rollover or rear-end crashes, recovery involves more than just physical healing. There may be financial, legal, and emotional hurdles to address in the weeks that follow. Seeking timely medical attention and support services is essential to ensuring a full and stable recovery process.
