Wells, VT (July 27, 2025) – A 40-year-old Granville, NY man was tragically killed Sunday afternoon following a crash involving a motorcycle and a Jeep at the intersection of Vermont Route 30 and South St in Wells. Vermont State Police confirmed that the collision occurred around 3:35 p.m.
According to officials, the victim, identified as Ricky Chandler, was riding a Kawasaki motorcycle northbound on VT-30 when a Jeep turned left onto the highway from South St, directly into his path. The two vehicles collided, causing Chandler to suffer significant trauma. Emergency responders transported him to a nearby hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
The driver of the Jeep, a Vermont resident, was reportedly uninjured. Authorities have not released that individual’s identity, and no charges have been filed at this time. Vermont State Police say the investigation remains ongoing, and they have asked anyone who witnessed the crash to contact the Rutland Barracks.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Ricky Chandler as they mourn this heartbreaking loss.
Motorcycle Fatalities in Rural Vermont
The fatal crash that claimed the life of Ricky Chandler on VT-30 highlights the increased vulnerability of motorcyclists on rural roadways in Vermont. Intersections such as South St and Route 30 may appear quiet, but the combination of turning vehicles, limited sightlines, and high speeds can create dangerous situations in an instant.
Motorcyclists are often left with little margin for error when a vehicle turns across their path. Unlike drivers in enclosed vehicles, riders have no external protection and often face fatal outcomes even in moderate-speed collisions. In this case, Chandler’s route on a rural highway intersected with a turning vehicle, resulting in a loss that now reverberates through two communities in Vermont and upstate New York.
Unfortunately, these types of incidents are not rare. Left-turn collisions are among the most common causes of fatal motorcycle crashes nationwide. Drivers frequently misjudge motorcycle speed or fail to see them altogether—a problem exacerbated in rural areas where traffic volumes are low but speeds are high.
For those left grieving, the aftermath can be overwhelming. Funeral expenses, unanswered legal questions, and the emotional burden all add to the pain. Families often benefit from local legal guidance and support services to navigate what comes next and ensure their loved one’s story is fully acknowledged.
Authorities encourage witnesses to come forward in cases like this, as additional details can clarify fault, support future prevention efforts, and offer closure to families in mourning.
If your family has been affected by a fatal motorcycle crash, securing trusted legal and emotional support can help you begin the path to healing.
