White Oak Township, MI (August 21, 2025) – A tragic collision claimed the life of a 53-year-old Mason man on Monday morning following a two-vehicle crash at the intersection of Howell Rd and M-52 (Stockbridge Rd) in Ingham County. The fatal crash occurred around 7:40 a.m., according to the Ingham County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies reported that the Mason man, now identified as Jeffrey Wendt, was driving eastbound on Howell Rd when he failed to stop at the posted stop sign. His vehicle entered the intersection and was struck by a southbound semi-truck on M-52, driven by a 23-year-old man from Perry.
The impact of the crash forced Wendt’s vehicle underneath the semi-trailer, pinning him inside. Despite emergency efforts, Wendt was pronounced dead at the scene due to the severity of his injuries. The driver of the semi-truck was unharmed, and no passengers were involved in either vehicle.
Authorities closed the intersection temporarily while they conducted an investigation and cleared the wreckage. The roadway has since been reopened.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Jeffrey Wendt during this heartbreaking time.
Fatal Intersection Collisions in Michigan
This devastating crash at M-52 and Howell Rd serves as a painful reminder of the dangers present at rural intersections—especially those regulated by stop signs. In many parts of Ingham County and other areas of Michigan, rural crossroads lack traffic signals, relying solely on driver caution and visibility. When a stop sign is missed or ignored, the results can be deadly—particularly when large commercial vehicles like semi-trucks are involved.
Jeffrey Wendt’s tragic death occurred in a situation all too common on Michigan’s roadways. Failing to yield at stop-controlled intersections continues to be a leading factor in serious and fatal crashes statewide. The large size and speed of commercial trucks on highways like M-52 increase the risk of fatal injury in collisions involving smaller passenger vehicles.
Semi-truck collisions are especially severe due to the sheer weight and momentum of the vehicle. In underride crashes, like the one reported Monday, smaller vehicles can become trapped beneath a trailer, often resulting in catastrophic or fatal injuries. Even at moderate speeds, the consequences are often irreversible.
In the wake of such incidents, families are left to grapple with profound grief while also facing difficult logistical and legal questions. Investigations into fatal crashes often include scene reconstruction, mechanical inspections, and witness interviews. These findings help provide closure and may be essential if insurance claims or legal proceedings follow.
