Wichita, KS (August 14, 2025) – Two Wichita residents sustained serious injuries late Wednesday night in a motorcycle crash on I-135, just north of the city. The Kansas Highway Patrol reported that the collision occurred around 10:45 p.m. near the 101st St N exit.
According to KHP, a 2017 Harley Davidson motorcycle was traveling southbound from 101st St N when, for reasons still under investigation, the 51-year-old male driver lost control. The motorcycle veered off the roadway, entered the median, and both the driver and his passenger were thrown from the bike.
The passenger, a 41-year-old woman, and the driver were transported to Via Christi St. Francis Hospital in Wichita with serious injuries. No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
Authorities have not determined the cause of the incident, and the Kansas Highway Patrol continues to investigate.
Our thoughts are with both injured individuals as they recover.
Motorcycle Safety on Kansas Highways
Motorcycle crashes on interstates like I-135 often result in severe injuries due to the lack of physical protection for riders. Even single-vehicle crashes, like this one, can have life-threatening consequences when riders are ejected from the motorcycle.
Data from the Kansas Department of Transportation shows that motorcycle accidents accounted for a disproportionate share of serious injury collisions in 2024. Loss of control is a common factor, often linked to roadway conditions, mechanical issues, or rider error.
Riders are encouraged to wear DOT-approved helmets, maintain a safe speed, and undergo regular motorcycle safety training. On high-speed routes like I-135, defensive riding is essential, as is ensuring the motorcycle is in proper working order before each ride.
