Wilmington, DE (September 18, 2025) – A serious traffic collision occurred on Wednesday, September 17, on South Maryland Avenue in New Castle County, leaving a 59-year-old scooter rider critically injured. The incident, reported around 3:15 p.m., involved a motorized scooter and a sedan, resulting in the rider being trapped beneath the vehicle.
According to Lieutenant Abigail Haas, Public Information Officer for New Castle County Paramedics, several good Samaritans intervened before first responders arrived. They used a jack to lift the weight of the sedan, allowing rescuers to reach the trapped victim.
When emergency responders from the Five Points Fire Company and New Castle County Paramedics arrived, they found the rider beneath the vehicle. Fire department personnel extricated him, and paramedics began treating him on-site. The injured individual was then transported in serious condition to Christiana Hospital in Stanton, suffering from a chest injury and potential internal trauma.
The Delaware State Police are conducting an investigation to determine the cause of the collision. The agencies involved in the response included New Castle County EMS, Five Points Fire Company, Minquas Fire Company, and Delaware State Police. New Castle County Police were also on the scene.
