Winston-Salem, NC (September 13, 2025) – A tragic accident involving a tractor-trailer claimed the life of a 67-year-old man Thursday afternoon in a business parking lot in Winston-Salem. The fatal incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. as the victim was attempting to alert a driver about a missing fuel cap.
According to a news release from the Winston-Salem Police Department, Thomas Douglas Ander, 67, was assisting during a refueling process when the tractor-trailer began to pull away from the fueling area. Ander noticed that the truck’s fuel cap was not secured and tried to get the driver’s attention.
In the process, Ander became entangled with the trailer and was subsequently run over by the rear section of the vehicle. Emergency personnel responded to the scene, but Ander was pronounced dead on-site due to the severity of his injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, also 67 years old, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. At this time, no charges have been announced, and the Winston-Salem Police Department is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of Thomas Douglas Ander during this time of heartbreaking loss.
Tractor-Trailer Accidents in North Carolina
Thursday’s fatal incident in Winston-Salem is a sobering reminder of the dangers associated with commercial vehicle operations—even in non-traffic environments such as parking lots or loading areas. Tractor-trailers, due to their size and limited maneuverability, pose unique hazards that can quickly turn deadly when people are nearby and visibility is limited.
This case is particularly tragic because it involved a well-meaning attempt to prevent a fuel hazard. Unfortunately, miscommunication and timing resulted in catastrophic consequences. Unlike highway collisions, these kinds of incidents often occur in quiet, familiar places—such as business parking areas or service yards—where people may feel less at risk and let their guard down.
Across North Carolina, industrial and commercial vehicle accidents involving pedestrians are less frequent than roadway crashes but often far more severe. Tractor-trailers have significant blind spots, and even minor movements can result in devastating injuries when individuals are nearby. This is especially true during fueling, loading, or backing maneuvers where coordination between ground personnel and drivers is critical.
For families who lose a loved one in these kinds of accidents, the aftermath can be filled with grief, unanswered questions, and a need for clarity about what happened and why. Investigations may involve workplace safety procedures, vehicle maintenance, and driver awareness—all of which play a role in preventing future tragedies.
