Winston-Salem, NC (September 13, 2025) – A tragic accident involving a tractor-trailer claimed the life of a 67-year-old man Thursday afternoon in a business parking lot in Winston-Salem. The fatal incident occurred around 12:30 p.m. as the victim was attempting to alert a driver about a missing fuel cap.
According to a news release from the Winston-Salem Police Department, Thomas Douglas Ander, 67, was assisting during a refueling process when the tractor-trailer began to pull away from the fueling area. Ander noticed that the truck’s fuel cap was not secured and tried to get the driver’s attention.
In the process, Ander became entangled with the trailer and was subsequently run over by the rear section of the vehicle. Emergency personnel responded to the scene, but Ander was pronounced dead on-site due to the severity of his injuries.
The driver of the tractor-trailer, also 67 years old, remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. At this time, no charges have been announced, and the Winston-Salem Police Department is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the incident.
