Wonder Lake, IL (September 4, 2025) – A woman sustained serious injuries Tuesday morning after a traumatic accident involving an industrial lawnmower in the 7000 block of Hiawatha Dr in Wonder Lake, according to officials with the Wonder Lake Fire Protection District.
Emergency crews were dispatched at approximately 11:56 a.m. on September 3 in response to a report of a worker injured while operating equipment. Paramedics arrived to find a woman in her 60s suffering from a deep laceration to her lower leg. She had been riding an industrial standing lawnmower while mowing a yard as a private contractor when the incident occurred.
No other workers were present at the scene. According to Wonder Lake Fire Chief Matthew Yegge, neighbors stepped in to assist before first responders arrived. A tourniquet was applied to control heavy bleeding, and EMS initially requested an air medical evacuation due to the severity of the injury. However, after evaluating response times, paramedics opted for faster ground transport to Northwestern Medicine Hospital in McHenry.
As of now, the circumstances leading to the injury remain unclear, and no further updates have been provided regarding the victim’s current condition or whether she has been transferred for specialized care.
We send our best wishes for the woman’s recovery and strength to her family during this time.
Work-Related Equipment Accidents in Illinois
Accidents involving heavy-duty landscaping equipment, like the one reported in Wonder Lake, underscore the serious dangers that contract workers and laborers face during everyday job duties. Standing or riding industrial mowers carry powerful blades and mechanical parts that, when mishandled or malfunctioning, can result in traumatic injuries—even during routine use.
The physical toll from workplace incidents involving cutting equipment or industrial tools is often severe, especially in cases involving limb trauma or deep lacerations. Quick medical response, including proper wound control and immediate transport, is critical in these cases to avoid long-term damage or life-threatening blood loss.
In Illinois, contractors and private laborers may not always have access to the same protections and benefits as employees working under a larger company. When a serious injury occurs in a solo work environment—as it did in this incident—there can be added complexity in seeking compensation, understanding liability, or managing medical costs.
While the specifics of how the lawnmower injury occurred remain under investigation, this case raises important questions about safety procedures, equipment inspections, and job-site readiness. It also emphasizes the value of community response and the critical role neighbors or bystanders can play before EMS arrives.
For victims and families affected by serious workplace accidents, the path to recovery often involves more than just physical healing. Navigating insurance claims, possible disability implications, and legal rights can be overwhelming without the right guidance.
