Woodbine, NJ – Fatal Fiery Crash on Route 611 Near Fremont Ave

August 9, 2025

Woodbine, NJ (August 9, 2025) –  A tragic single-vehicle crash in Cape May County claimed the life of a passenger on Tuesday afternoon, while bystanders acted quickly to save the driver. The incident occurred around 4:15 p.m. on Route 611/Tyler Rd near Fremont Ave in the borough of Woodbine.

According to New Jersey State Police, 77-year-old Walter Chattin of Villas was driving south on Route 611 when his vehicle veered off the roadway to the left. The car struck a utility pole, overturned, and became fully engulfed in flames. Good Samaritans who witnessed the crash rushed to the wreckage and were able to pull Chattin from the burning vehicle.

Despite their efforts, the passenger in the vehicle did not survive. Emergency crews arrived on scene to extinguish the fire, tend to the injured driver, and secure the area for investigators. Authorities are still working to determine the circumstances that led to the crash. Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of the victim, and we wish Mr. Chattin a full recovery from his injuries.

Car Accidents in New Jersey

Single-vehicle crashes, like the one on Route 611 in Woodbine, can be especially dangerous when high speeds, roadway departures, or vehicle rollovers are involved. In rural areas, these incidents often occur on two-lane roads with limited shoulders and roadside obstacles such as utility poles. When a vehicle overturns or catches fire, the risk of severe injury or death rises significantly.

In New Jersey, common factors contributing to roadway departures include driver distraction, medical emergencies, adverse weather, and mechanical failures. The heroic actions of Good Samaritans in this case demonstrate the importance of community response, but also underscore how quickly a crash can escalate to a life-threatening situation.

Families affected by fatal collisions face not only emotional pain but also the challenge of handling sudden medical expenses, funeral costs, and insurance matters.
