Woodville Twp, OH (August 25, 2025) – A devastating multi-vehicle collision early Sunday on the Ohio Turnpike resulted in the death of one driver and left another injured. The incident occurred at approximately 12:19 a.m. in the eastbound lanes near milepost 77 in Sandusky County’s Woodville Township, according to the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).
Authorities report that a 20-year-old man from Sandusky was driving a passenger vehicle eastbound when he struck the rear of a semi-truck. The impact pushed both vehicles into the path of an SUV traveling in the middle lane, driven by a 47-year-old man from University Heights. After the initial impact, the semi and the sedan veered off the left side of the highway and slammed into the median wall. The semi then caught fire.
Tragically, the 69-year-old driver of the semi, a resident of Sterling Heights, Michigan, succumbed to his injuries at the scene. The young driver of the sedan was transported to a nearby hospital with injuries that were described as non-life-threatening. The SUV driver was unharmed.
Following the crash, the Ohio Turnpike was shut down in both directions for approximately one hour. Eastbound right lanes were reopened after emergency crews cleared the most critical hazards. Multiple agencies responded to the scene, including the Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission, Sandusky County EMS, several local fire departments, and a towing service.
The cause of the crash remains under active investigation by OSHP.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family of the truck driver who lost his life. We also extend our wishes for a full and quick recovery to the injured motorist.
Turnpike Collisions and Fatal Crash Risks in Ohio
High-speed crashes on roadways like the Ohio Turnpike often carry severe, life-threatening consequences—especially when multiple vehicles are involved. Collisions with commercial trucks, like the one in Woodville Township, frequently result in devastating injuries or fatalities due to the force and scale of impact.
While the exact cause of this crash is still under investigation, rear-end collisions involving semis can stem from driver inattention, speed differentials, or following too closely. When heavy vehicles strike barriers or catch fire, the risks extend to everyone nearby—including emergency responders and other motorists.
Victims of such traumatic incidents often face overwhelming medical, emotional, and financial challenges. For families who lose loved ones, the aftermath may involve grief, funeral costs, and unanswered questions. Meanwhile, injured survivors may need extensive care and support to navigate recovery, insurance claims, and legal processes.
