Ypsilanti Township, MI (August 5, 2025) – A tragic crash early on Sunday morning on the westbound I-94 exit ramp to Wiard Rd claimed the life of a 30-year-old Ypsilanti man after he was struck by a vehicle while standing outside his pickup truck, according to Michigan State Police.
The incident occurred around 5:00 a.m. on August 3. The victim had reportedly called his brother to bring fuel to his disabled vehicle, which was parked on the right shoulder of the ramp. When the brother arrived at the scene, he saw a second pickup truck that had veered off the road into a wooded area, and found his brother lying critically injured in the roadway.
Police believe the man had been standing near or beside his vehicle when a 50-year-old Ypsilanti driver, who may have fallen asleep at the wheel, crashed into the parked truck and then struck the pedestrian. Investigators stated that alcohol or drugs are suspected to be contributing factors in the crash.
Both the pedestrian and the at-fault driver were transported to an area hospital. Sadly, the 30-year-old victim later succumbed to his injuries. The other driver suffered only minor injuries and is currently under investigation.
Michigan State Police continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision. Toxicology results and additional evidence will determine whether criminal charges will be filed.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and loved ones of the victim during this difficult time.
Fatal Roadside Collisions and DUI Risks in Michigan
Roadside tragedies like Sunday’s fatal crash on I-94 in Ypsilanti Township are painful reminders of how vulnerable people are outside their vehicles, even when parked on the shoulder. In this case, the victim was seeking help for a disabled vehicle when he was struck, turning a simple act into a fatal event.
Unfortunately, impaired driving remains one of the leading causes of fatal crashes in Michigan. According to the Michigan Office of Highway Safety Planning, thousands of lives are lost each year to alcohol- or drug-related collisions. Crashes involving fatigued or impaired drivers, especially on highway exit ramps, are particularly deadly, as speed, limited visibility, and the element of surprise leave little time to react.
When impaired drivers fail to maintain control or fall asleep behind the wheel, the consequences for others can be devastating. Victims are often pedestrians, disabled drivers, or roadside responders, all of whom rely on others to act responsibly behind the wheel.
For families facing sudden loss due to a preventable crash, the grief is compounded by unanswered questions and legal uncertainty. Medical bills, funeral costs, and prolonged investigations can add to the emotional burden.
