Yuma, AZ (August 11, 2025) – A 20-year-old man from Somerton was killed early Sunday morning in a high-speed crash in Yuma, according to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office. The collision occurred before 6:00 a.m. near the intersection of W. Eighth St and S. Alicia Ave.
Investigators say a 1993 GMC Sierra 3500 dually was traveling westbound on Eighth St when it was struck from behind at high speed by a 2019 Kia Forte LXS. Deputies and Rural Metro Fire crews arrived to perform life-saving measures on the Kia’s driver, identified as Izaak Dominguez, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The GMC driver was transported to Onvida Health with minor injuries. Authorities say alcohol appears to be a factor in the crash, but the investigation is ongoing.
We extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mr. Dominguez and wish the injured driver a full recovery.
Rear-End Collisions in Arizona
While rear-end crashes are common, high-speed impacts can be deadly—particularly when the lead vehicle is significantly larger and heavier, as in Sunday’s collision in Yuma. The force of such impacts often results in catastrophic injuries or fatalities for occupants of the smaller vehicle.
In Arizona, alcohol impairment remains a leading contributor to severe crashes, reducing reaction time and impairing judgment. Safety officials urge all motorists to avoid driving under the influence and to maintain safe following distances, especially when traveling at higher speeds. Even small increases in speed can drastically reduce the time available to avoid a collision.
