What Happens When a Pedestrian Is Struck by a Vehicle?
Pedestrian accidents can cause serious harm because people on foot have little protection from a moving vehicle. The severity of an injury can depend on the vehicle’s speed, the point where the person was hit, and whether the pedestrian was thrown or fell after being struck.
Medical evaluations may reveal injuries that are not immediately obvious, including head trauma, broken bones, or internal injuries. Records from medical providers can help document the type and extent of harm.
Photos of vehicle damage, nearby traffic signs, lane markings, and lighting can also provide useful information about what happened. Witness accounts may help establish where each person was positioned before the wreck. Driver visibility, roadway design, and vehicle movement may also be reviewed when determining how a pedestrian accident occurred.
