Carlton Twp., MI (July 27, 2026) – A 17-year-old boy lost his life, and a 16-year-old was injured in a single-vehicle collision on Saturday, July 25. The accident happened around 6:00 p.m. on East Brown Road, west of Fry Road.
The Freeport-area teenager was driving a pickup truck when it left the roadway and struck a tree. The truck later caught fire.
A 16-year-old girl from the Sunfield area was riding as a passenger. She was airlifted to a Grand Rapids hospital with critical injuries. Investigators continue working to determine what caused the wreck.

How Can Tree Strikes Lead to Severe Harm?
Trees and other fixed objects do not move away when struck by a vehicle. This can cause the vehicle to stop very quickly, placing intense force on everyone inside. The front or side of the vehicle may absorb much of that energy.
