Bridgewater, NJ (June 1, 2026) – A fatal three-vehicle wreck occurred on Route 22 near Grove St in Bridgewater after a Tesla came to a complete stop in the center lane, according to police.
Investigators said the Tesla was traveling eastbound at about 4:05 p.m. on Sunday, June 1, when its driver stopped in the middle lane. An SUV behind the Tesla was able to stop, but a passenger car driven by a 91-year-old Bridgewater resident could not avoid striking the SUV from the rear.
After the collision, the passenger car traveled into the right lane before sliding back toward the median. The vehicle then struck a tree and came to rest along the center divider. The driver was taken to a hospital, where he later died. A 93-year-old woman riding in the car was hospitalized with minor injuries.
Police said the occupants of the SUV, including a 33-year-old man from Brooklyn, New York, and two passengers, were involved, but no injuries were reported. The name of the deceased man was not released, and investigators did not immediately explain why the Tesla driver stopped in the roadway.
