Poweshiek Co., IA (June 4, 2026) – One person died, and another was seriously injured on Wednesday afternoon, June 3, after an accident involving a semi-truck and a train in Poweshiek County. The accident happened around 12:45 p.m. on Highway 21 at the Iowa Interstate Railroad tracks between Brooklyn and Victor.

Poweshiek County investigators said a train struck the semi-truck at the crossing, causing more than 20 railroad cars to derail. The semi driver was killed, and a passenger was taken by air ambulance with serious injuries.

The names of those involved were not released in the initial report. People aboard the train, including those in the engine area, had only minor injuries and did not require hospital care.

Highway 21 was closed in both directions between Interstate 80 and Highway 6 because of the derailment. The road was expected to remain closed for an extended cleanup and track repair process. The wreck remains under review as investigators work to confirm the crossing details and full timeline.

We extend our sincere condolences to the driver’s family and loved ones, and wish the injured passenger a full recovery.

What Details Are Usually Reviewed After Train and Semi-Truck Accidents?

Train and semi-truck accidents frequently require a close review of crossing signals, warning lights, vehicle movement, and the position of the truck before contact. Investigators may also check whether the train crew had time to react and whether the crossing equipment was working properly.

Large trucks can take longer to clear railroad crossings because of their length, weight, and load. When a train derails, cleanup can take longer due to damaged tracks, rail cars, cargo, and roadway repairs.

Photos, witness accounts, train data, and vehicle damage may help establish the timeline. Medical records can also clarify the severity of harm for those inside the truck. These details are reviewed together when a railroad crossing crash leads to a major derailment.
