Independence, MO (September 10, 2026) – A person died after a two-vehicle crash involving a motorcycle on Tuesday night, September 8, in Independence. The crash occurred shortly after 11 p.m. near Noland Rd and the Interstate 70 off-ramp.

A 2025 Kawasaki motorcycle was traveling south on Noland Rd when a 2023 van exited eastbound I-70 and turned north onto the road. The motorcycle collided with the van as the van made the turn.

Emergency units took the motorcycle driver to a hospital for treatment. The person later died from their injuries. The driver of the van stayed at the location and cooperated with investigators.

Police said the motorcyclist was wearing a helmet. The person’s identity had not been released while authorities worked to notify next of kin. Anyone with information about the collision can contact the Independence Police Department Tips Hotline at 816-325-7777. Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the fatal accident.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to the deceased person’s loved ones.

What Should Motorcyclists Know About Safety Near Highway Ramps?

Motorcyclists face added risks near highway ramps because vehicles may change direction or enter traffic lanes with limited space. Drivers turning onto another road should check carefully for motorcycles before completing a turn. Motorcycles are smaller than passenger vehicles and can be harder to see, especially at night.

Helmets provide important protection for riders and can reduce the severity of head trauma during a traffic crash. Riders should also use headlights, remain visible to other drivers, and maintain a safe following distance.

Drivers can help prevent motorcycle crashes by checking mirrors and blind spots before turning or changing lanes. Giving motorcycles enough space is also important because they may need to adjust their position quickly. Extra caution around highway entrances and exits can help reduce the risk of serious injuries.
