Why Head-On Crashes Are Usually Among the Most Severe Traffic Accidents
Head-on crashes are frequently associated with serious or fatal outcomes because the force generated by two vehicles traveling toward one another can be substantial. Even at moderate speeds, the combined energy involved can lead to extensive vehicle damage and significant harm to occupants.
Several factors can contribute to these types of roadway incidents, including lane departures, driver distraction, fatigue, medical emergencies, impaired driving, or attempts to avoid obstacles. Divided highways and median barriers are commonly used to reduce the likelihood of opposing vehicles crossing into oncoming traffic.
Following a head-on crash, investigators commonly review roadway evidence, vehicle positions, witness accounts, and other available information to better understand how the vehicles came into contact. Findings from these reviews can help clarify the sequence of events and identify contributing circumstances.
