Silver Lake, KS (July 2, 2026) – A woman was killed, and another person was seriously hurt in a head-on collision on U.S. 24 near Northwest Humphrey Road outside Silver Lake on Wednesday, June 1.

The fatal crash happened shortly after 4 p.m. when a pickup truck traveling eastbound attempted to pass other vehicles. According to the Kansas Highway Patrol, the truck entered the westbound lane, where the driver of an oncoming car tried to avoid contact but was unable to do so.

The driver of the car, 28-year-old Dakota Bacon of Topeka, died at the scene. A 28-year-old passenger riding with her was taken from the scene with suspected serious injuries. The 50-year-old pickup driver from Leavenworth received minor injuries. The Kansas Highway Patrol continues to examine the circumstances that led to the collision.

Our hearts go out to Dakota Bacon’s family and loved ones during this difficult time.

Why Passing Maneuvers on Two-Lane Highways Can Be Dangerous

Passing on a two-lane highway requires clear visibility, accurate judgment, and enough distance to safely return to the proper lane before meeting oncoming traffic. Even a brief miscalculation can leave drivers with little time to avoid a head-on encounter.

Road conditions, vehicle speed, hills, curves, and traffic volume can all affect whether a passing maneuver can be completed safely. Drivers are encouraged to pass only in designated passing zones with an unobstructed view of the roadway ahead. Remaining patient behind slower traffic is usually the safer choice when visibility or distance is limited. Careful decision-making on rural highways can help reduce the risk of severe crashes and improve safety for everyone using the road.
