Greencastle, IN (July 23, 2026) – A pedestrian was hurt near the intersection of Washington St and Jackson St after being struck by a vehicle.
Greencastle Police Officers were called to the scene at about 2:50 p.m. on Tuesday, July 21, after receiving a report of a person hit by a vehicle.
Maria Stierwalt of Danville was found lying in the roadway while receiving medical assistance from a bystander. Stierwalt and the bystander said they were walking across Jackson St from the east when a southbound 2023 Chevrolet Trailblazer turning from Washington St hit her.
The driver, Tamara Coghill of Greencastle, told police she was making the turn and did not see the pedestrians had entered the crosswalk. Coghill stayed at the site and cooperated with the investigation.
Stierwalt was taken to a hospital by Putnam County EMS. She was alert when taken from the scene, but the extent of her injuries was not released. Jackson St between Washington St and Walnut St was temporarily closed. The investigation into the pedestrian accident remains underway as more details are reviewed.
