What Should Drivers Know About Rear-End Crashes?
Rear-end crashes can happen when a driver fails to stop in time for slowing or stopped traffic. Maintaining a safe following distance gives drivers more time to react when conditions change. Motorists should also keep their attention focused on traffic rather than on phones or other distractions.
Drivers should adjust their following distance based on weather, traffic, and road conditions. Wet or slippery roads can increase stopping distances, making it especially important to leave additional space between vehicles. Looking several vehicles ahead can also provide an earlier warning of sudden stops.
Seat belts should be worn by every driver and passenger on every trip. Proper restraint can help reduce injuries when a vehicle is involved in a collision or overturns. Drivers should also follow posted speed limits and remain alert when approaching intersections and areas with heavy traffic.
