White Lake Township, MI (August 27, 2026) – A 71-year-old man died and another man was injured after a boat crash Tuesday, August 25, on Oxbow Lake in White Lake Township, according to the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office.
Deputies said the boat was traveling at an excessively high rate of speed when it became airborne and landed on its side. As the boat sank, the driver, identified as Kirk Magnuson, 71, of White Lake, went underwater and did not resurface.
Law enforcement divers later recovered Magnuson’s body, and he was pronounced dead on shore. A 56-year-old passenger from Taylor was also thrown into the water, which was approximately 50 feet deep. Nearby boaters rescued him, and he was taken to a local hospital in stable condition.
The boat was recovered and impounded while officials investigated. Alcohol is not believed to have been a factor, and the Oakland County Medical Examiner’s Office ruled Magnuson’s death an accidental drowning.
