St. Clair County, IL (July 22, 2026) – One person was killed, and another was hurt on Tuesday afternoon, July 21, in a head-on collision on northbound I-255 near East St. Louis. It happened shortly after 2:45 p.m., near the interchange with I-64.
An early investigation found that a car traveling southbound left the roadway for unknown reasons, crossed the median into the northbound lanes, and struck an oncoming vehicle head-on. The driver of the southbound car was pronounced dead at the scene. The other driver was taken to a hospital. Authorities have not released an update on that driver’s condition.
All northbound lanes of I-255 were closed while police worked to clear the roadway, with traffic diverted onto I-64. The closure was expected to continue for an extended period, and drivers were urged to use alternate routes. The cause remains under review as the investigation continues.

Why Do Vehicles Sometimes Cross the Median Into Oncoming Traffic?
A vehicle can leave its lane and cross into a median for several reasons, from driver error to a sudden loss of control. Falling asleep at the wheel, a medical emergency, or a distraction like a phone can cause a driver to drift without realizing it until it’s too late to correct course.
Highway medians vary widely in width and design. Some interstates have wide grassy medians that give a driver more room and time to regain control before reaching opposing traffic, while narrower medians offer far less of a buffer. Cable barriers and concrete dividers are increasingly used on high-speed highways specifically to stop a vehicle before it crosses into oncoming lanes.
Once a vehicle enters opposing traffic, the outcome frequently depends on speed and reaction time on both sides. A driver in the opposing lane may have only a second or two to swerve or brake once a crossover vehicle becomes visible. Because both vehicles are typically moving at highway speed, the combined force involved tends to be much greater than in a typical rear-end or same-direction impact.
