Grayson County, TX (July 22, 2026) – One person was killed, and four others were hurt on Wednesday morning when two pickup trucks collided head-on in Grayson County. It happened on FM 121 between Tioga and Gunter, near Calk Road, just before 9 a.m.
An eastbound Ram pickup veered into the opposing lane and struck a westbound Ford F-350, according to a preliminary investigation. Two of the injured were flown by helicopter to area hospitals, while two others were taken by ambulance.
FM 121 was closed for more than three hours while crews cleared the wreck. The cause remains under investigation, and troopers continue examining what happened.

Why Are Head-On Crashes So Fatal?
Head-on accidents are consistently among the deadliest types of roadway events, largely because the combined speed of two oncoming vehicles multiplies the force of the impact. On rural farm-to-market roads, where speed limits can reach 60 to 70 miles per hour and there is no median barrier, a driver who crosses the center line has very little room for error.
Several factors commonly lead to a vehicle drifting into the opposing lane. Distraction, drowsiness, and misjudging a curve are frequent causes, especially on long, straight stretches of highway where attention can wander. Passing another vehicle at the wrong moment can also put a driver directly in the path of oncoming traffic.
Two-lane rural roads lack the shoulders, rumble strips, or barriers found on larger highways, giving drivers less room to correct course before a serious outcome occurs. Newer trucks and SUVs are built with reinforced frames and additional airbags, but even these features cannot fully offset the physics of two vehicles meeting head-on at highway speed.
