Brooklyn, NY (August 31, 2026) – A 28-year-old woman was walking in a crosswalk at 55th St. and Third Ave. in Sunset Park on Saturday, August 29, when a Cadillac Escalade traveling southbound struck her, police said. She suffered severe head and body trauma and was taken to NYU Langone Hospital — Brooklyn in critical condition. She was later pronounced dead.

A separate pedestrian accident occurred shortly before midnight, at Boston Rd. and Corsa Ave. in Williamsbridge, the Bronx. A 53-year-old man was hit by a 31-year-old woman driving a Nissan Altima eastbound on Boston Rd. as he attempted to cross the street. He sustained head and body trauma and was taken to Jacobi Hospital in critical condition. The driver remained at the scene and was not arrested. The circumstances surrounding both crashes remain under investigation as more information is gathered.

Our deepest sympathies are with the family and loved ones of the woman who lost her life.

What Can Contribute to Serious Pedestrian Crashes in New York City?

Pedestrian crashes can result from several roadway factors, including vehicle speed, driver inattention, poor visibility, and complex intersections. Crosswalks are designed to give people a designated place to cross, but drivers still need to watch for pedestrians and follow traffic signals.

Lighting can also affect visibility, especially during nighttime hours or in locations with heavy traffic. Weather, parked vehicles, construction, and other obstructions may make it harder for drivers to see someone crossing.

Pedestrians can reduce their risk by using marked crossings, watching for turning vehicles, and staying alert near busy intersections. Drivers should scan for people on foot, slow down when approaching crossings, and avoid distractions while driving.

1Seek treatment promptly after being injured in an accident. Your first priority should always be your health. Many providers offer treatment on a lien basis, meaning you can get the care you need now and pay later when your claim is resolved.
2Before speaking with an insurance company, make sure you have the facts. An official police report is the most reliable record of what happened and can help establish liability An experienced attorney can assist you in obtaining this report and using it to protect your interests.
3Consider having your case reviewed by a qualified attorney who can guide you through the next steps. They will safeguard your rights and pursue the compensation you deserve.
