Clarksville, TN (August 20, 2026) – A 14-year-old bicyclist was injured after being struck by an SUV on Tuesday afternoon, August 18, on Black Oak Cir. in Clarksville.
The collision happened around 2:30 p.m., according to the police. The teen was taken by LifeFlight to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville.
Detectives provided an update on Wednesday, saying the bicyclist was in stable condition with non-life-threatening injuries and was expected to make a full recovery. The SUV driver was cited for failing to provide proof of financial responsibility, or proof of insurance, and was released.
No additional charges are expected. The department’s Fatal Accident Crash Team investigated the crash, and the inquiry remains underway as investigators work to establish the full circumstances.
Our thoughts are with the young cyclist as recovery continues.
What Are the Risks for Bicyclists Without Helmets?
Bicycle helmets can reduce the risk of serious head and brain injuries during a fall or collision. A properly fitted helmet should sit level on the head and remain secure under the chin while riding.
Young cyclists can face additional risks because they may have less experience judging vehicle speeds, traffic gaps, and turning movements. Riding on predictable paths and following traffic signals can help reduce those risks.
Drivers also have a responsibility to watch for people on bicycles, particularly near intersections, residential streets, and areas where cyclists commonly travel. Maintaining a safe distance when passing gives cyclists more room to avoid sudden hazards.
Visibility can also affect safety. Bright clothing, reflective materials, and lights can make a bicyclist easier for drivers to see, especially during low-light conditions.
