Why Helmet Use and Road Conditions Matter in Motorcycle Crashes
Motorcycle riders face greater risks than occupants of enclosed vehicles because they have less physical protection during a roadway emergency. Safety equipment, including helmets, can help reduce the likelihood of severe head trauma and may improve survival rates in serious crashes.
Road conditions can also affect motorcycle safety. Construction zones, uneven pavement, loose gravel, and lane shifts may create added challenges for riders. Motorcycles are generally more sensitive to roadway surface changes than larger vehicles, making careful speed control and increased attention especially helpful in work zones.
After a serious motorcycle collision, medical personnel usually evaluate riders for head, neck, and internal injuries. Some injuries may not be immediately apparent, which is why ongoing observation and treatment can be necessary even when a person appears stable shortly after the crash.
