What Should Drivers Know About Red-Light Crashes?
Running a red light can create a serious risk because vehicles entering an intersection may not expect cross traffic. Drivers should always obey traffic signals and come to a complete stop when required. Taking a moment to check the intersection before proceeding can help prevent collisions.
Speed can also affect the severity of a crash and reduce the time available to respond to unexpected hazards. Drivers should follow posted speed limits and adjust their speed to traffic and road conditions. Staying focused and avoiding distractions can provide more time to recognize a changing signal or another vehicle entering the intersection.
Seat belts are an important part of vehicle safety and should be used by every occupant on every trip. Proper restraint can help reduce injuries during a collision, including side-impact crashes. Drivers should also never operate a vehicle while impaired by alcohol or other substances.
