Olive, NY (August 24, 2026) – Two people died following a head-on collision on Sunday morning, August 22, on State Rte 28 in the town of Olive.
Emergency units arrived shortly after 6:45 a.m. after a westbound Chevrolet crossed into the eastbound lane and struck a Mercedes-Benz. The reason the Chevrolet crossed the center line has not been determined.
The Chevrolet driver, 19-year-old Peter Bonenfant of Smithtown, was extricated from the vehicle. He received lifesaving measures before being taken to Health Alliance Hospital in Kingston, where he later died.
The Mercedes-Benz driver, 72-year-old Philip Jacobus, was also extricated and received lifesaving measures. He was taken to Health Alliance Hospital before being transferred to Mid-Hudson Regional Hospital, where he later died. The investigation into the cause of the collision is still underway.
