Pueblo County, CO (June 9, 2026) – Two people lost their lives in separate traffic accidents Saturday night, June 6 in Pueblo County, according to preliminary reports released by state troopers.
The first fatality happened around 9:50 p.m. along eastbound Highway 50 near milepost 312 in the Pueblo region. Investigators said 46-year-old Robert J. Hepler was crossing the highway southbound when a Chevrolet Trax traveling eastbound attempted to stop. The front of the SUV struck the pedestrian, who was pronounced dead at the scene of the roadway.
Later that night, around 11:20 p.m., emergency units were called to Highway 165 near milepost 36, close to Colorado City. Early findings show that a Subaru Impreza Outback was heading east toward Interstate 25 when the driver failed to negotiate a right-hand curve. The vehicle crossed into opposing lanes before leaving the shoulder and rolling multiple times.
The driver, identified as 36-year-old Crystal M. Case, was ejected during the rollover and died at the scene. Additional details about both fatal accidents had not been released as of Tuesday.
Troopers are still working to determine what factors contributed to the two deadly crashes. We extend our deepest sympathies to the families and friends mourning these losses.
What Factors Are Commonly Examined After Fatal Highway Accidents?
After a deadly highway accident, investigators commonly review several details to better understand how the sequence unfolded. Road design, visibility, lighting, and weather are commonly examined, especially when a driver leaves the roadway or a pedestrian is involved. Tire marks, vehicle movement, and debris patterns may also help explain what occurred before the fatal contact.
In cases involving rollovers, investigators frequently study vehicle speed, steering input, and whether seat belts were used. For pedestrian-related cases, traffic flow and crossing patterns are often reviewed to determine how both parties approached the roadway. Mechanical inspections can also reveal whether tire failure, brake problems, or other equipment issues contributed to the outcome. Information gathered during the early stages may later help clarify the full timeline surrounding the highway accident.
