Philadelphia, PA (June 24, 2026) – A pedestrian and an SUV driver were hospitalized on Tuesday evening after a vehicle struck a woman and crashed into a building in West Philadelphia.
According to police, the incident occurred at approximately 6:30 p.m. on June 23 near the intersection of 56th Street and Lansdowne Avenue. Officers on foot patrol heard the crash and quickly responded to investigate.
Authorities said a 2016 white Ford Explorer SUV, operated by a 76-year-old taxi driver, struck a woman in her 30s before crashing into a building on the corner. Investigators believe the driver may have experienced a medical emergency immediately before the collision.
Police reported that the vehicle had been stopped in the travel lane on 56th Street for several minutes with its hazard lights and windshield wipers activated. The SUV then partially moved into a parking lane, rolled onto the sidewalk, suddenly accelerated, and struck the pedestrian before crashing into the structure.
Both the driver and the injured woman were transported to Penn Presbyterian Medical Center. The driver was reported to be in critical condition, while the pedestrian was listed in stable condition with neck and right-side pain.
The crash caused significant damage to the building, which was later condemned. Utilities were shut off, and residents were forced to leave the property. The incident remains under investigation.
