Carter County, TN (July 22, 2026) – Two people were injured on Wednesday morning when a Jeep Wrangler crossed into oncoming traffic and struck a Toyota Corolla on Tennessee State Route 91 in Carter County, an area of Northeast Tennessee near Elizabethton and Johnson City, closing part of the roadway. The Wrangler was headed north, and the Corolla was headed south at the time of the collision.

The driver of the Corolla was airlifted to Johnson City Medical Center with suspected serious injuries. The driver of the Wrangler was taken to a hospital with suspected minor injuries.

Charges are pending, and the case remains under review, according to investigators. All lanes have since reopened.

We extend our best wishes for a full recovery to those injured in the crash.

What Causes a Driver to Cross Into Oncoming Traffic?

Crossing into oncoming traffic can happen in a split second, and the results are severe because vehicles meet at a combined high speed. Even a brief lapse in attention can cause a driver to drift out of their lane and into the path of an oncoming vehicle. These moments are especially dangerous on two-lane highways without a barrier between opposing lanes.

Several factors can lead a driver to cross the center line unintentionally. Fatigue, distraction from a phone or dashboard, and unfamiliarity with a winding or narrow road are common causes. Poor weather, glare from the sun, or a sudden mechanical issue like a tire blowout can also send a vehicle off course.

Two-lane highways without a median barrier offer little protection once a vehicle crosses into the opposite lane. Rumble strips and reflective lane markings are designed to warn drivers before they drift, but they cannot always prevent a driver from crossing over if they are asleep or seriously distracted. Because of the speeds involved, these roadway departures lead to more severe outcomes than same-lane incidents.
