What Should Motorcyclists Do After a Roadway Collision?
Motorcycle safety becomes especially important after a roadway collision because riders have less physical protection than people inside enclosed vehicles. Wearing a properly fitted helmet, protective jacket, gloves, pants, and sturdy footwear can reduce the risk of serious harm.
Riders should also maintain a safe following distance and remain alert for vehicles changing lanes or turning across their path. Good visibility is another key concern, particularly after dark or in heavy traffic. Working headlights, reflective gear, and clear signals can help other drivers recognize a motorcycle sooner.
If a motorcycle becomes disabled, moving to a safe position away from moving traffic can reduce additional danger when conditions allow. Witness information, photographs, and other available details may also help document what happened.
