Augusta, GA (August 19, 2026) – Two people were killed in a head-on crash on Wednesday morning on Washington Road near Woodbine Drive in Augusta, according to the Richmond County Coroner’s Office.
The victims were identified as 49-year-old Phillip Wasson of Augusta and 57-year-old Heather Michelle Lanier, also of Augusta. Wasson, an off-duty Richmond County deputy, was driving westbound when another vehicle crossed the center line and struck his vehicle head-on.
Wasson was pronounced dead at the scene. Lanier, who was driving the second vehicle, was taken to Wellstar MCG, where she later died. The crash shut down four lanes of Washington Road, and authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.
