Zeeland, MI (September 1, 2026) – Two young adults were seriously injured on Sunday, August 30, after a vehicle rolled over multiple times in Zeeland Township, according to the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office.
The crash happened on 48th Avenue near Felch Street. A preliminary investigation found that a 2012 Volkswagen Jetta was traveling southbound when it ran off the right side of the road, struck an embankment, and overturned multiple times. At least one occupant was ejected from the vehicle, while investigators were working to determine whether the second occupant was also thrown from the car.
The 20-year-old woman and 21-year-old man inside the vehicle were both transported to a nearby hospital with serious injuries. Deputies with the sheriff’s office Traffic Services unit remained at the scene to reconstruct the crash. 48th Avenue was temporarily closed between Felch Street and Byron Road during the investigation.
We hope for a quick recovery for the victims.
What Can Make Rollover Crashes Especially Dangerous?
Rollover crashes can expose vehicle occupants to several different types of forces as a vehicle leaves the roadway and overturns. Occupants who are not properly restrained may face a greater risk of being partially or completely ejected, which can result in severe injuries. Seat belts help keep people positioned inside the passenger compartment during a collision and can reduce the likelihood of ejection.
Vehicle speed, road conditions, steering movements and the type of vehicle can all affect how a rollover develops. Drivers should reduce speed when approaching curves or when roadway conditions make it harder to maintain control. Avoiding sudden steering inputs and staying focused on the road can also help motorists respond more safely when a vehicle begins to drift.
Keeping tires properly inflated and maintaining other vehicle components can support better handling. Drivers should also remain aware of changes in pavement, shoulders, and roadway edges that could affect vehicle stability.
