What Can Happen in a Single-Vehicle Highway Crash?

A single-vehicle crash can occur when a vehicle leaves the travel lanes and encounters a ditch, barrier, embankment, or another roadside hazard. Loss of control may be associated with speed, roadway conditions, vehicle problems, or sudden driver actions. The severity of injuries can depend on the vehicle’s speed and the type of impact that follows.

Investigators may examine tire marks, vehicle damage, roadway conditions, and the vehicle’s final position. Available video and witness accounts can also help establish what happened before the vehicle left the roadway. These details can provide information about the vehicle’s path and the circumstances surrounding the crash.
