What Investigators Examine in Single-Vehicle Fatal Crashes
When a vehicle departs the roadway and strikes a fixed object, investigators typically review factors such as speed, driver condition, roadway design, and environmental conditions at the time of the crash.
Evidence, including tire marks, vehicle damage, and the vehicle’s final resting position, can help reconstruct the sequence of events. Authorities may also examine whether mechanical issues, distraction, fatigue, or a medical emergency contributed to the vehicle leaving its lane of travel. These findings help investigators better understand how the fatal collision occurred.
