Harney County, OR (June 30, 2026) – Three people were hurt after a two-vehicle collision along Highway 78 West near the Hot Springs turnoff.
The accident happened at about 4:06 p.m. on Sunday, June 28, after a passerby called 911 to report the vehicles involved. According to emergency dispatch information, a gray Ford Fusion traveling westbound struck a van as traffic ahead slowed while vehicles attempted to turn into the nearby Hot Springs entrance.
Emergency units found the Ford Fusion blocking the left lane with radiator fluid leaking onto the highway. A 78-year-old woman driving the sedan was alert and able to follow commands but was treated for injuries to her left leg, hand, foot, and wrist. Crews also noted she had an advanced spinal cord implant, raising concerns about possible back pain. A man driving the van received treatment for abdominal pain, minor arm pain, and a light concussion, while his male passenger reported soreness in his right leg. Everyone had exited the vehicles before help arrived.
The woman was taken to Harney District Hospital for further evaluation. The highway remained partially blocked for nearly two hours while crews cleared the roadway, and the damaged Ford Fusion was removed before traffic gradually returned to normal.
The cause of the wreck is still being examined as investigators continue gathering information.
We hope everyone hurt in this collision makes a full and speedy recovery.
What Can Lead to Rear-End and Turning Collisions on Rural Highways?
Drivers on rural highways often encounter changing traffic patterns with little warning, especially near recreational turnoffs, side roads, or scenic destinations. Vehicles slowing to make turns can create unexpected hazards for motorists approaching from behind if following distances are too short or attention shifts away from the road.
Several factors may be reviewed after this type of roadway collision, including vehicle speeds, traffic flow, visibility, braking distances, and whether drivers had enough time to react. Road design, weather, pavement conditions, and mechanical issues may also provide useful context. Medical evaluations can further clarify the extent of harm experienced by those involved. As more information becomes available, these details help build a clearer picture of how the sequence of events unfolded.
