Portland, OR (September 8, 2026) – Three people were injured after a vehicle crashed into a Tesla dealership during a test drive Monday morning, September 7, in Portland.

Portland Fire & Rescue responded shortly after 10:30 a.m. to the dealership at 4330 S Macadam Avenue after receiving a report that a vehicle had crashed into the building at high speed. Police at the scene told fire officials that the crash occurred during a test drive.

The driver reportedly mistakenly accelerated while attempting to brake, causing the vehicle to crash into the dealership. Three people were taken to a hospital for treatment, although the extent of their injuries was not immediately known.

Our thoughts are with the three people injured in this crash and their families and loved ones. We wish all three injured individuals a full and speedy recovery.

What Should Drivers Know About Accidental Acceleration?

Accidental acceleration can happen when a driver presses the accelerator instead of the brake, particularly during low-speed maneuvers or when moving into a parking area. Confusion between the two pedals can cause a vehicle to accelerate unexpectedly and may leave little time to correct the mistake. Drivers should remain focused and avoid rushing when maneuvering near buildings, pedestrians, or other vehicles.

When preparing to stop, drivers should keep their attention on the pedals and surrounding area rather than becoming distracted by other controls. This is especially important during test drives, when a driver may be unfamiliar with a vehicle’s controls or pedal response. Taking a moment to become comfortable with the vehicle before moving can help reduce confusion.

Parking lots, dealership entrances, garages, and buildings can place vehicles close to people and structures. Drivers should move slowly in these areas and be prepared to stop if something unexpected happens. Keeping a clear path ahead and using controlled pressure on the pedals can help reduce the risk of unintended acceleration and collisions.
