Why Are Multi-Vehicle Crashes Frequent in the Cajon Pass?
The Cajon Pass is a steep mountain grade on I-15 connecting the Inland Empire to the High Desert, known for heavy truck traffic and frequent speed changes as vehicles climb or descend the grade. Multi-vehicle incidents are common in this stretch, since a sudden slowdown near the summit can catch following drivers off guard.
Back and leg symptoms, including numbness, are frequently reported after a rear-end or chain-reaction collision, since the sudden forward-and-back motion can affect the spine and nerves running through the lower back. These symptoms don’t always indicate a severe injury, but they’re taken seriously because nerve-related pain can sometimes point to something more significant.
Blocking a middle lane on a mountain grade like this can create significant backups, since traffic has fewer alternate routes available compared with a flatter stretch of highway. Tow truck crews working in this kind of terrain also have to account for the grade itself when safely removing a disabled vehicle.
