Eveleth, MN (June 14, 2026) – Four people were hurt following a two-vehicle crash Saturday night, June 13, at the roundabout connecting Highway 53 and Park Avenue in Eveleth.
According to initial MSP reports, a 2005 Ford Escape was traveling through the roundabout around 11:04 p.m. when a 2018 Jeep Compass entered and failed to yield. The Jeep then struck the rear passenger side of the Ford.
The Ford driver, 21-year-old Johan Everett Hare of Chisholm, and passenger Christopher Mark Desantell, 23, of Isanti, were both reported to have non-life-threatening harm. The Jeep driver, 37-year-old Alexandria Renee Nyhusmoen of Hibbing, also received non-life-threatening injuries. Two children riding in the Jeep, a 9-year-old boy and an 11-year-old girl, were also hurt. One child was taken to Essentia Virginia for treatment. Alcohol was suspected as a factor involving the Jeep driver. Further details surrounding the wreck have not yet been released as investigators continue reviewing the circumstances.
We hope those affected by the crash make a full and speedy recovery.
How Wet Roads Can Affect Roundabout Safety
Wet pavement can reduce tire traction and make it harder for drivers to stop or steer safely, especially when entering roundabouts. Even at lower speeds, slick roads may increase the chance of a vehicle sliding or failing to yield properly to traffic already inside the circle.
Roundabouts are designed to improve traffic flow and lower the severity of many roadway crashes, but they still require drivers to slow down and remain alert. Visibility can also become limited during rain or nighttime travel, making it more difficult to judge the movement of nearby vehicles.
In many roadway investigations, crews review weather conditions, vehicle positioning, and traffic patterns to better understand what contributed to the crash. Tire condition, braking distance, and driver reaction time may also be examined when determining how the collision unfolded.
