Butte County, CA (September 2, 2026) – A 60-year-old Chico man was killed in a head-on crash early on Monday, August 31, on State Route 99 north of Broyles Road in unincorporated Butte County.
According to the California Highway Patrol, the crash happened around 3:18 a.m. when the man was driving a 2019 Nissan Altima northbound and crossed into the southbound lane for unknown reasons. The Nissan then collided head-on with a 2017 Kenworth truck tractor driven by 54-year-old Jose L. Estrada Loza of Anderson.
The Altima driver was found trapped inside his vehicle when emergency personnel arrived. Firefighters extricated him before he was transported to Enloe Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead shortly before 5 a.m. Estrada Loza was not reported injured.
CHP said drugs or alcohol do not appear to have been factors in the crash. The circumstances that caused the Altima to cross into the opposing lane remain under investigation.
Our deepest condolences go out to the family, friends, and loved ones of the man who lost his life in this tragic crash. We also extend our thoughts to everyone affected by this loss.
What Makes Head-on Crashes Especially Dangerous?
Head-on crashes can be particularly severe because two vehicles traveling in opposite directions may collide with substantial combined force. Even vehicles equipped with modern safety features can sustain significant damage in these types of impacts. The risk of serious injury can increase with vehicle speed, differences in vehicle size, and the angle of impact.
Drivers can reduce the risk of crossing into opposing traffic by staying focused and maintaining control of their vehicles. Fatigue, distraction, sudden medical problems, and difficult road conditions can affect a driver’s ability to remain safely within a lane. Maintaining a steady speed and avoiding abrupt steering movements can help drivers respond to changes in roadway conditions.
Divided highways and multi-lane roads still require careful attention to lane position. Drivers should follow lane markings and avoid driving while overly tired or distracted. If a vehicle begins to drift from its lane, a calm correction and gradual steering can help restore control without creating another hazard.
