Dartmouth, MA (July 14, 2026) – A 74-year-old bicyclist died after a collision with a dump truck on Route 6 West in Dartmouth on Monday, July 13. The fatal crash was reported just before noon.

According to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, officers arrived to find the dump truck stopped along the right side of the roadway. The cyclist, identified as Denise Olson of Westport, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Investigators determined the collision involved the bicycle and the truck. A portion of Route 6 West and Reed Road southbound between Woodcock Drive and State Road was closed for several hours before reopening. The circumstances surrounding the collision are still being examined as investigators continue their review.

We extend our sincere sympathies to Denise Olson’s family, friends, and everyone affected by this tragic loss.

Why Bicycle Crashes Involving Large Trucks Can Be Especially Severe

Bicycle crashes involving large commercial vehicles usually result in serious outcomes because of the significant size and weight difference between the people involved. Even at relatively low speeds, the limited protection available to cyclists can increase the risk of life-threatening injuries.

Investigators commonly review the travel paths of both the bicycle and the larger vehicle, along with lane positioning, visibility, traffic controls, and roadway design. Physical evidence, witness accounts, and vehicle damage may help establish how the collision developed.

Sight lines can also become an important part of the review, particularly when large trucks are involved. Factors such as blind spots, traffic flow, and the available space for cyclists may provide valuable context as investigators work to understand how these crashes occur.
