Pompano Beach, FL (January 1, 2026) – Three teenagers lost their lives in a devastating crash that occurred just before 7 p.m. on Sunday, December 29, along the 1600 block of North Federal Highway, according to the Broward County Sheriff’s Office (BCSO).
The fatal crash involved a 2014 white BMW M5, driven by 18-year-old Richard Manuel Alcocer, and a 2024 Acura Integra. A preliminary investigation revealed that the Acura had just turned onto North Federal Hwy and was traveling in the same direction when the BMW lost control after striking a raised median curb. The BMW then sideswiped the Acura before crossing the roadway, jumping the west-side curb, and crashing into a Broward County Transit bus stop, a concrete light pole, and a tree.
All three occupants of the BMW, Richard Alcocer, Miguel Montez, 16, and Ruben Baltazar, 15, were transported to Broward Health North, where they were later pronounced dead. The teenagers, described by family members as inseparable friends, all attended Blanche Ely High School, with Richard having graduated earlier in the year.
“They were like the Three Musketeers,” said Richard’s brother, Juan Alcocer, who shared that the families became aware of the crash after receiving a phone alert from one of the boys’ devices—showing a sudden stop after high-speed movement.
The driver of the Acura did not report injuries and remained at the scene. Investigators noted a sideswipe-type impact on the front driver’s side of the Acura.
According to the BCSO, the BMW driver’s excessive speed is being investigated as a contributing factor. Authorities continue to examine the full circumstances surrounding this tragic loss.
Our hearts go out to the families and friends of Richard, Miguel, and Ruben during this time of unimaginable grief.
Speed-Related Teen Fatalities in Broward County
The heartbreaking crash in Pompano Beach reflects a grim reality on Florida’s roads, with excessive speed remaining as one of the leading causes of fatal crashes, particularly among young drivers. When combined with limited experience and peer influence, high-speed driving can turn tragic in seconds.
This crash took the lives of three teenagers in a matter of moments, shattering families and a school community. According to the Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles, Broward County consistently ranks among the top counties for serious injury and fatal crashes involving teens. Urban corridors like North Federal Highway, with high-speed traffic and commercial driveways, pose an increased risk for loss of control, especially when speeding is involved.
For families, the emotional toll of losing a child is immeasurable. Many are left with unanswered questions and a long road of grief. While investigators continue their work, community members are also left reflecting on what more can be done to prevent such devastating incidents, from promoting safe driving programs in schools to implementing roadway safety changes in high-risk zones.
Even when no other parties are seriously injured, the ripple effects of fatal teen crashes extend to classmates, teachers, first responders, and an entire community left mourning what could have been.
