St. Louis, MO (January 1, 2026) – A late-night crash on Interstate 70 in St. Louis County claimed the life of a pedestrian on Tuesday evening, prompting an investigation by the Missouri State Highway Patrol. The incident occurred on December 30, at approximately 10:29 p.m., on the westbound lanes of I-70 at MO-115.

Traffic was disrupted in the area as authorities responded to reports of a vehicle striking a pedestrian in the roadway. Upon arrival, fire personnel and paramedics assessed the situation and worked to assist the injured individual. Despite these efforts, a 40-year-old man from Topeka, Kansas, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced deceased at the scene at around 10:46 p.m.

Investigators reported that the pedestrian was in the westbound lanes when he was struck by a 2001 Ford Expedition traveling through the area. The SUV was being operated by a 39-year-old woman from St. Louis, MO, who was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash. The vehicle sustained extensive damage and was later removed from the scene by Terry’s Towing.

The pedestrian was transported by the St. Louis County Medical Examiner to the St. Louis County Morgue following the on-scene pronouncement. Authorities noted that the victim was considered exempt from using a safety device due to the nature of the incident. No additional injuries were reported.

Troopers from the Missouri State Highway Patrol Troop C responded to the scene, with assistance from the Major Crash Investigation Unit. Officials continue to review the circumstances surrounding how the pedestrian came to be in the roadway and whether environmental or traffic-related factors played a role. At this time, the investigation remains ongoing.

Our thoughts are with the victim’s family and loved ones as they cope with this sudden and devastating loss.

Pedestrian Accidents in Missouri

Fatal pedestrian crashes like the one reported on I-70 westbound at MO-115 highlight the serious risks faced by individuals on foot along Missouri’s high-speed roadways. Interstates and major highways are particularly dangerous environments for pedestrians, especially at night, when visibility is reduced, and drivers may have limited time to react.

The location of this incident is a heavily traveled corridor in St. Louis County, where traffic volumes remain high even during late evening hours. When a pedestrian enters or remains in the roadway under these conditions, the likelihood of severe or fatal injuries increases significantly. High speeds, multiple lanes, and low lighting often combine to create hazardous situations that can turn tragic in moments.

Across Missouri, pedestrian fatalities continue to be a major safety concern. State data shows that many deadly pedestrian crashes occur after dark and frequently involve roadways not designed for foot traffic. Interstates like I-70 are built for fast-moving vehicles, leaving little margin for error when unexpected obstacles appear in travel lanes.

In this case, investigators are working to determine the events leading up to the collision, including traffic flow, visibility, and the pedestrian’s movements prior to impact. These details are critical not only for understanding what happened but also for identifying ways similar tragedies might be prevented in the future.

Beyond the immediate investigation, incidents like this can have a lasting impact on families and communities. Losing a loved one in a pedestrian crash often leaves families facing emotional trauma alongside complex legal and financial questions. Accessing accurate information, community resources, and professional guidance can be an important part of the recovery process.
