Collier County, FL (January 2, 2026) – A devastating multi-vehicle crash claimed the lives of four people and left several others injured early on Thursday morning along State Road 82, just west of Corkscrew Rd in Collier County. The Florida Highway Patrol responded to the scene shortly after the crash was reported at approximately 12:27 a.m.

According to authorities, the collision involved three vehicles: a Kia Forte, a Kia Sedona, and a Subaru Ascent. The Kia Forte, traveling eastbound behind the Sedona, attempted to pass by moving into the westbound lane, directly into the path of the oncoming Subaru. The resulting head-on collision triggered a chain reaction as the Kia Forte then spun and collided with the Kia Sedona.

Tragically, the driver of the Kia Forte, a 30-year-old woman from Immokalee, was pronounced dead at the scene. The Subaru’s driver, a 51-year-old woman from Fort Myers, and one of her passengers, a 25-year-old Fort Myers woman, also died at the crash site.

Three additional passengers in the Subaru, a 25-year-old man, a 51-year-old man, and an 85-year-old woman, all from Fort Myers, suffered serious injuries and were transported to a nearby hospital. Sadly, the 85-year-old woman was later pronounced dead.

The driver of the Kia Sedona, a 41-year-old man from Naples, was not injured in the crash.

State troopers remained at the scene for several hours to investigate the cause of the collision. Preliminary findings indicate that the attempt to pass in a no-passing zone may have played a significant role.

Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and the community of Fort Myers as they grieve this heartbreaking loss.

Fatal Crashes and Rural Roadway Risks in Florida

Deadly collisions like the one reported early Thursday on SR-82 are among the most tragic and complex events on Florida’s roads. State Road 82 is a rural highway that has long been known for limited lighting, narrow lanes, and limited passing opportunities, all of which increase the likelihood of severe or fatal crashes.

This particular stretch west of Corkscrew Rd lacks the median barriers or expanded shoulders found on more modern highways. When vehicles attempt to pass at high speeds in such conditions, the margin for error is slim. In this case, a split-second decision to pass resulted in a multi-fatality head-on collision, impacting multiple families and sending shockwaves through the Fort Myers and Immokalee communities.

Multi-vehicle collisions on rural roads also pose unique risks for emergency response. With fewer access points and longer distances from trauma centers, timely intervention becomes more difficult, especially when multiple victims are involved.

For those who survive such incidents, the road to recovery is long and often complicated by grief, physical trauma, and financial challenges. Loved ones left behind also face the burden of funeral arrangements, medical costs, and the emotional toll of unexpected loss.
