Greene Co, MO (January 2, 2026) – A serious head-on collision early New Year’s Day left two young drivers injured on MO-13, approximately ten miles north of Springfield. The crash took place just after midnight at around 12:37 a.m. on January 1.

A 17-year-old male from Bolivar was traveling the wrong way in a 1996 Ford Ranger when the vehicle collided head-on with a 2015 Volkswagen Jetta driven by a 19-year-old man, also from Bolivar. The Missouri State Highway Patrol confirmed that Vehicle 1 was heading northbound in the southbound lanes at the time of the crash.

Both drivers were injured in the collision. The teen driver of the Ford Ranger sustained minor injuries and was transported by EMS to Mercy Hospital in Springfield. The driver of the Volkswagen Jetta suffered moderate injuries and was also taken to Mercy Hospital for treatment. Both vehicles were totaled and removed from the scene by Henry’s Towing.

Trooper J.D. Lock of MSHP Troop D, along with the MCIU Team 3 and CPL K.R. Waters, assisted in the investigation and response. Authorities are continuing to look into the circumstances that led to the wrong-way travel, including possible confusion or roadway visibility issues.

We extend our thoughts to both injured individuals as they recover from this frightening crash.

Wrong-Way Crashes in Missouri

Wrong-way collisions are some of the most dangerous incidents on Missouri roadways, often resulting in severe or fatal outcomes. The crash on MO-13 involving two young drivers is a sobering reminder of the devastating effects of even a momentary lapse in navigation.

According to law enforcement, the Ford Ranger was traveling northbound in the southbound lanes, directly into the path of oncoming traffic. Despite both drivers wearing safety belts, the force of the impact left both vehicles destroyed and required emergency transportation for medical care.

Missouri has seen a troubling number of wrong-way crashes in recent years, especially during late-night or early-morning hours when visibility is reduced, and driver fatigue or disorientation can play a role. These types of accidents are particularly dangerous due to the high likelihood of head-on impacts at speed.

While the exact cause of the wrong-way travel in this case is still under review, it underscores the importance of clear road signage, driver alertness, and defensive driving, especially on high-speed routes like MO-13. Young drivers are statistically more vulnerable to making critical judgment errors, often due to inexperience or unfamiliarity with complex road systems.

For those injured in serious crashes like this, timely medical attention is only the beginning. Understanding available resources for recovery, medical, financial, and legal, can be just as crucial. Recovery paths may vary, but no one should have to navigate them alone.
