Walsenburg, CO (January 2, 2026) – A deadly chain-reaction collision shut down Interstate 25 near Walsenburg on the morning of January 2, after two separate crashes left one man dead and three others injured. Colorado State Patrol (CSP) troopers responded to the scene just before 7:30 a.m. in the southbound lanes near mile marker 40.

According to CSP, the initial crash occurred when a semi-truck was rear-ended by a box truck amid slowed traffic and poor visibility caused by sun glare. Both drivers moved to the right shoulder to exchange information while traffic continued to flow slowly past them.

Moments later, a second and more severe crash occurred nearby. A Ford F250 rear-ended a Hyundai Elantra, causing the pickup truck to roll and strike a Hyundai Sonata before coming to a stop. The Ford’s driver, a 46-year-old man, suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Elantra was transported to the hospital with unspecified injuries, while the Sonata’s driver was uninjured. The box truck driver from the earlier crash also sustained moderate injuries and was airlifted to a regional hospital.

The crash occurred on January 2 and resulted in a full closure of I-25 in both directions for several hours. Northbound lanes reopened around 9:15 a.m., but southbound traffic remained diverted at Exit 41 (Rugby Rd) while investigators from the CSP Vehicular Crimes Unit examined the scene and crews worked to clear the wreckage.

We extend our deepest condolences to the loved ones of the man who lost his life and hope for a full recovery for the injured.

Fatal Crashes on Colorado Highways

Tragic collisions like the one that occurred south of Walsenburg on January 2 reveal just how quickly conditions can change on Colorado highways. Interstate 25 is a major route connecting multiple regions of the state, and its exposure to elements like sun glare and variable traffic flow can lead to sudden and catastrophic accidents—especially when visibility is impaired.

In this case, what began as a minor rear-end collision quickly escalated into a deadly three-vehicle crash involving a rollover and highway-wide closure. Emergency responders acted quickly to render aid and direct traffic, but despite their efforts, the incident resulted in devastating loss.

Traffic safety experts continue to emphasize the importance of maintaining safe distances, adjusting speed to visibility, and staying fully alert behind the wheel. When secondary crashes occur after an initial incident, it’s often due to distracted or unaware drivers approaching the scene too quickly.
