Why Wrong-Way Freeway Crashes Are Among the Most Deadly Multi-Vehicle Collisions
Wrong-way crashes on divided highways are among the most dangerous types of roadway incidents because they often result in high-speed head-on impacts. These collisions typically occur with little warning, leaving drivers minimal time to react or avoid impact.
Freeways like I-375 are designed for one-directional travel, and even a short period of wrong-way driving can create severe risks. Contributing factors may include impairment, confusion at ramps, or missed signage.
After these crashes, investigators usually examine roadway entry points, traffic camera footage, and driver impairment indicators. These details help determine how a vehicle entered the wrong lanes and what factors led to the collision.
