Lakeland, FL (January 5, 2026) – A wrong-way crash on West Pipkin Road claimed the life of one driver and left another seriously injured on the evening of January 4. The head-on collision occurred just after 7:30 p.m. in the 4100 block of W Pipkin Rd and involved two Honda vehicles, according to the Lakeland Police Department.
Investigators stated that 81-year-old Mary Lockhart was driving a white Honda SUV eastbound in the inside lane of the westbound side of the road. At the same time, 20-year-old Ethan Duncan of Plant City was traveling westbound in a gray Honda Accord when the two vehicles collided head-on.
Emergency personnel from Lakeland Police, Polk County Fire Rescue, and the Lakeland Fire Department responded quickly and performed life-saving efforts at the scene. Both drivers were transported to Lakeland Regional Health with severe injuries.
Despite medical intervention, Lockhart was pronounced dead at the hospital. Duncan survived but remains in serious condition as of the latest update.
The Lakeland Police Department’s Traffic Homicide Unit launched an investigation and shut down the roadway for approximately four hours Sunday night to process the scene and gather evidence.
